Ronnie Howard


Sheriff Howard joined the ranks of the Maryland State Police on September 2, 1982, as a Cadet assigned to the Truck Weight Enforcement Division stationed at the Delmar Scale House in Wicomico County, Maryland.

After graduating from the Training Academy in June 1984, Sheriff Howard was stationed at Barrack “T” Leonardtown, Barrack “V” Berlin and Barrack “X” Princess Anne. He performed road patrol duties and was subsequently reassigned to the Criminal Investigation Section. Sheriff Howard retired from the Maryland State Police in January 2008.

On February 1, 2008, Howard began his career with the Somerset County Sheriff’s Office. In February 2010, he was appointed to the position of Chief Deputy by then Sheriff Robert Jones.

In December 2014, Howard was sworn in as Sheriff for Somerset County.

On August 22, 1666, Sheriff Howard’s 8th great-grandfather, Stephen Horsey, was appointed as the first High Sheriff of Somerset County by Lord Calvert.  At the time of Horsey’s service, Somerset County included all of present day Worcester and Wicomico counties and the lower part of present day Sussex County, DE.
